Review: Handcrafting High-end Cosmetic Formulas

In this post I am going to be reviewing the book, "Handcrafting High-end Cosmetic Formulas" from Paloma Sanchez. I am going to be giving an honest and in-depth review of the book.  I also want to make a disclaimer because I got her first course, she allowed people to get her physical book for free. That being said it does not change my opinion of the book. Once I make more formulas form the original course that she did I will do a review in that.  For this review I am going to organize it by how you will be looking at it when you first get it.
Shipping
After announcing that she was going to give the physical book for free she told us to be looking for an email that it was shipped. After getting the email, I waited for the book. I saw that others got the book while I had not. Confused I emailed her customer service and they help helped me as much as they could. After sometime, Paloma emails me and others who did not get it and re-sent it out. Great customer service!!!
The Arrival
The book was in perfect condition. It was packaged well.
The Cover
I really like how it showcased the formulas. They do look like high-end formulas. It is definitely better packaging than the drugstore. I am really glad that she did this and I think it is very smart because it does not look like it is going to be another crappy DIY book. It looks extremely professional and well thought out.
Once you open it up there is all the copyright information. Basically saying that the book is for personal use only and you can't sell her formulas or make them for a business or you will be using her intellectual property and can be held in court. The Dedication and Appreciation I am not going to give anything away with that because it will mean more when you read it. After that is the table of contents. In my personal opinion I wish she would of listed out the formula name and added the page numbers but that may have taken too many pages so, I will give the benefit of the drought. After that is another amazing picture. Once you turn the page you will see the cover photo again with no text on it and next to it is an introduction. The next page introduces the first chapter. Which is the fundamental information. The next two page spread is how to convert percentages into grams. I have a blog post on that if you want to check it out here. The page next to it has the information on converting percentages into ounces. I feel that is is explained well and if someone had no prior knowledge they could understand it. What would of help was how to figure the opposite. Converting grams into percentages to understand why there is 0.13 grams of X ingredient. On the next page, there is a list of some common terms. The next five pages are all for the people who are trying to start a business. They are very helpful!
Chapter 2
This chapter is all about ingredients. I really like how she started off the chapter by explaining what natural cosmetics mean and gives examples. The next page talks about how you need to learn about the ingredients to make sure that you know what you are doing. After that it goes into the functions of all the ingredients. Such as Thickeners, Emulsifiers, and Liquids to name a few. They give you a great information to what they are and how they work. The next three pages are on how to substitute products in a formula. It is great and very comprehensive. After that it is the bulk of the book which is all of the Ingredients Guides. These are extremely helpful and I reference them quite often.
Chapter 3
After that she goes into the equipment needed. One of them made pressing eyeshadow so easy and highly recommend. I talk about it in a post on my diamond level blog. That is four pages. After that she goes into to talking about pH and then another page about equipment. The one thing that is missing is more information about preservatives. She did briefly talk about them in the functions but it could have been more detailed in my opinion.
Chapter 4
This chapter is all about skincare. I absolutely love that she included that you should prep your skin before makeup it is very important. Right under it she talks about skin types another very important topic.
Now to the Skincare formulas. I want to make this very clear. This book is marketed and really for business. I say that because of the size quantity that she wants you to make. Even with the makeup formulas you will have enough and then sum. This is great for her marketing story however this is why I made the statement earlier that I wish she would have noted the way she divided or multiplied it so that we could properly scale up and down. Technically, you still can as you can divide all the numbers by to or increase them, however it is not ideal. I want to also say that these would be amazing for business because they have great active ingredients that anyone would love. For someone with few ingredients then it might be over whelming. Given that she does include substitution in the Ingredient guide I don’t think it would be that big of a deal.
Chapter 5
This chapter will change anyone's life. It is the Waterproof, smudge-proof and resistant formula bases. They are all the hype.
Chapter 6
This is the face makeup chapter. The first formulas is the face blurring primer. It is amazing. It is a dupe for many high-end formulas. After that she has a little foundation section that goes over the different types of foundations, what goes into a foundation, color theory, and how to create your perfect shade. After that it is her liquid foundation, cream foundation, concealer, stick foundation, setting powder (it is amazing!!!!), setting spray, contour stick, a cream base, and a liquid base.
Chapter 7
This chapter is the eye products. These formulas are top notch!!!!! The first formula I made from this book was the shimmer eyeshadow and from this formula I relished how fitting the name of the book was. AND THEN THE MATTE EYESHADOW. It is so buttery and smooth!!! After that the formulas go as follow, pressed glitters, cream eyeshadow formula, liquid eyeliner formula, Eyeliner pencil, a glitter gel, brow pencil, liquid brow pomade, mascara, and brow pomade.
Chapter 8
This is the lip products. I am going to be honest. I have not made anything form this section as I did not want to make Three lipstick if the same color since I am limited on my packaging.
After that there is a page spread of suppliers from all over the world that you can purchase from. Index and then the book is done!

I think it goes without say too much that this book no matter how much you pay for it is very worth it! The amount of information that you learn is immense and I can wait is she the next one that is coming!
