Formulating More Advanced and Complicated Formulations
As a blogger and chemistry major, I want to set realistic expectations for cosmetic formulations. Formulations vary in complexity, ranging from a simple cuticle oil to creating a buffer for a cosmetic formulation. This is something to consider when trying to find your own formulas or following those of others.
Updated Method For Adjusting PH
Since getting a new meter, I wanted to update my methods for checking and adjusting pH to accommodate using different meters or pH strips. I want to clarify that pH strips are not my recommended method for adjusting pH levels in businesses. However, I do realize that pH meters are quite expensive. I see people either using the wrong pH strips or mixing the methods. I will share how to get the best results with what you have.
I bought a new pH Meter
Yes, you read the right. I got a new pH meter. I have had my other one for about two years. It did a great job. It still works fine. I just needed an upgrade for what I was doing, and there were a couple of reasons.
Avocado and Vitamin C Serum
I have really been wanting to incorporate a vitamin C into my routine; however, that is easier said than done. Even though I love formulating, I'd not want to have to make a vitamin C serum every two weeks. Who else can relate? So it thought of a way to make it stable.
Formulating Basics: Adding, Removing, Or Substituting Ingredients in Formulations
After you find a reference formula, the next step you would want to take is adding more ingredients. Maybe substitute ingredients for what you have. In this post, I will tell you how to do that. This skill is a fundamental concept that you need to know how to do. This skill comes right after learning how to scale formulations, which you can learn here.
Making An Emulsion with Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate
I want to talk about a new to me emulsifier. This raw material can be under many different trade names such as Arlacel™ 165 (Croda), Radia 7490 (Oleon), Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate (Solvay Novecare), CreamMaker Blend (MakingCosmetics), HallStar® GMS SE/AS (Hallstar), Lexemul® 561 MB (INOLEX), Lonzest™ MSA Glyceryl Stearate (Lonza), SIMULSOL™ 165 (SEPPIC), TEGO® Care 165 (Evonik Operations GmbH), iEmul 165 (Polybase 165) (Cosphatech LLC), and LotionPro 165 (Lotion Crafter). It has so many trade names I am going to refer to with its INCI name, Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG 100 Stearate going forward.
Polyquaternium-10
I got some polyquaternium-10 to make a product that can coacervate actives onto the hair and skin. Since I have not shared it on the blog, I will share an ingredient guide.
Free Member-to-Member Discussion
My other community page has a horrible comment processer. I made this post where you can ask me and other people who have access to the blog. I will replace the link and link it on the side bar.
