Introduction to Microbiology for Formulators
I want to dive into why do we even need preservatives in the first place. I know most of you understand that we need them, but what are we actually concerned about. This post is going to answer that for you.
What should we look for in a supplier?
In this post, we will discuss what we should look for in a supplier, when buying ingredients to make our products. This post is going to be more geared to home crafters and small businesses. So keep that in mind with this blog post.
Just Starting Out, What Should I Buy?
From the last post, I realized it can be hard to know what to buy first. So, I am going to share a great starting list of raw materials to get. I am going to list the trade names and the INCI names. Unless they are the same, then I will not list the INCI name. Please compare the INCI name; they should be the same. Seriously, shop around for the best prices and shipping. Check out the supplier page here. Here is a basic list to start with (in no particular order):
I have a Science-Related Degree. How do I get into Cosmetic Formulation?
After a conversation I had with someone, I wanted to make a detailed post about this situation. I know I have a wide audience. From high schoolers to people without a science background, to people who want to get into the industry, and to people already in the industry. There is so much I wish I'd known when I started doing what I do, which is why I try to share my advice and experience. There is so much that you just learn by being in the industry. This post will be my advice on how to get into the industry with a science-related degree.
Anhydrous Salicylic Acid and L-Ascorbic Acid Serum
This product is based on solubility chemistry. Both L-Ascorbic Acid and Salicylic Acid are soluble in glycols such as propylene glycol, butylene glycol, glycerin, propanediol 1,3. With some simple heating you can dissolve both. L-ascorbic acid is notoriously hard to work with. It needs a low pH to work and it degrades within a month. By using propylene glycol, we do not have that same issue. There is no pH and there is no water to react with it.
Taking Note for Formulations
Taking notes is a vital part of the formulation process. I have a couple of posts on notebooks. I will link them at the end of the post. I wanted to make a more detailed post. From taking chemistry lab classes, I have had to learn how to take notes and be efficient with them. It was to your advantage to take the notes as it gave you more to write about in a final lab report. Instead of only being able to write it did not work and I don’t know why.
A Game Changer For Finding Posts
I am the first to say they it can be hard to find posts and I made the dang site. I found a super easy way to find posts now. I made a simple video to show you.
Aluminium Chlorohydrate Ingredient Guide
I know there is a ton of misinformation on aluminum-based compounds in cosmetics. So, I wanted to tackle some of that in the beginning of post. I wanted to make a general product that can help with sweating. A simple example formulation. I also have an antiperspirant, but I wanted to post this first.
